Endoscopy

Endoscopic procedures include esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), colonoscopy, and sigmoidoscopy. EGD evaluates the oropharynx, esophagus, stomach, and first part of the small intestine. It is useful in evaluating swallowing disorders, abdominal pain, and malabsorptive diarrhea, among other indications. Colonoscopy and sigmoidoscopy evaluate the colon and sigmoid, respectively, and are able to detect polyps or signs of mucosal inflammation.

Endoscopy is considered very safe and carries minimal procedural risk. Of course, as with every invasive procedure, the risk-benefit ratio is important to consider.

Bowel preparation is important for a successful and thorough endoscopic examination.

Contact Dr. Kahana for further instructions on how to prepare for an endoscopic evaluation.
